Which wounds need stitches?

Cuts longer than 1 centimeter that open when you move, deep wounds that show fat or muscle, bleeding that does not stop after 10 minutes of pressure, and cuts on the face, hands or joints that may scar or limit movement. Animal or human bites and very dirty wounds are cleaned and sometimes not closed right away to avoid infection.

Which wounds belong in the ER?

Heavy bleeding that cannot be controlled, wounds with an object stuck in them, cuts with loss of feeling or movement in the fingers, gunshot wounds and eye injuries. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

How is it done?

1. We clean the wound with pressurized saline and check for foreign bodies or tendon damage.
2. We apply local anesthesia; you only feel the initial pinch.
3. We close with stitches, staples (scalp) or adhesive (small, clean cuts).
4. We cover it with a dressing and give you written instructions.
5. We give a tetanus booster if your last dose was more than 5 years ago and the wound is dirty, or more than 10 years ago in any case.

When are stitches removed?

Face: 5 to 7 days. Scalp and trunk: 7 to 10 days. Arms and legs: 10 to 14 days. Joints: up to 14 days. Come back on the date we give you; leaving them longer makes the scar more visible.

How do I care for stitches?

Keep the wound dry for 24 hours; after that you can shower without rubbing. Change the dressing daily, don't apply alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, and keep the scar out of direct sun for 6 months. Come back sooner if there is pus, spreading redness, fever or if the wound opens.
