Rapid Strep Test in Houston | Walk-In, Results in Minutes

The rapid strep test tells you in 5 to 10 minutes whether your sore throat is caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria, which need antibiotics. At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud Lawndale we test children and adults without an appointment, every day from 9 AM to 9 PM.

How do I know if it's strep or a virus?

Strep throat usually causes an intense sore throat that starts suddenly, fever of 100.4 °F or higher, white patches on the tonsils, swollen neck glands and, in children, stomach pain or vomiting. If there is cough, runny nose and hoarseness, a virus is more likely and antibiotics won't help. Only the test confirms it.

How is the test done?

1. We swab the tonsils and the back of the throat; it takes seconds and may cause brief gagging.
2. The rapid result is ready in 5 to 10 minutes.
3. If positive, you start antibiotics at the same visit.
4. If negative but symptoms strongly suggest strep, in children and teens we send a throat culture to the lab and call you with the result.

What is the treatment?

Amoxicillin or penicillin for 10 days; an alternative if you are allergic. After 24 hours of antibiotics you are no longer contagious and can return to school or work if you have no fever. Finishing all 10 days matters even if you feel fine, to prevent complications such as rheumatic fever.

When should I come in the same day?

• High fever with sore throat and no cough
• Trouble swallowing saliva or opening the mouth
• A red, sandpaper-like rash on the body (scarlet fever)
• A household or school contact with confirmed strep
