Stool Test in Houston | Parasites & Occult Blood, Walk-In

Stool tests in Houston, TX. Detection of parasites and infections, in Spanish, no insurance needed.

A stool test detects parasites, intestinal infections and hidden blood that cannot be seen with the naked eye. At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud Lawndale you pick up the container, drop off the sample and we explain the result in Spanish or English, no appointment and no insurance needed.

When is a stool test needed?

When diarrhea lasts more than 3 days, with abdominal pain or bloating, persistent gas, mucus or blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or after travel with suspected parasites. It is also required for food-handler paperwork and to check children with frequent stomach aches.

Which tests do we run?

  • Ova and parasite exam: looks for eggs and parasites such as giardia, amoebas, roundworms and pinworms. A series of 3 samples from different days is recommended for better sensitivity.
  • Stool culture: identifies bacteria such as salmonella, shigella or E. coli when there is fever or bloody diarrhea.
  • Fecal occult blood: detects bleeding in the digestive tract that may indicate ulcers, polyps or, over age 45, be part of colon cancer screening.
  • General stool exam: consistency, pH, fat and white blood cells.

How do I collect the sample?

  1. Collect the stool in the sterile container we give you, without letting it touch toilet water or urine.
  2. Fill about a third of the container.
  3. Bring it to the clinic within 2 hours; if you can't, refrigerate it for a maximum of 24 hours.
  4. For occult blood, avoid red meat, ibuprofen and high-dose vitamin C for 3 days beforehand.

When are results ready?

The general exam and the parasite exam are processed at the lab; the stool culture takes a little longer because it must be cultured. We call you with the result and, if there is a parasite or infection, we give you the prescription on that call or at a visit.

How much does it cost?

The stool test, the 3-sample series and the culture have different prices, which we tell you when you pick up the container. Ask for the price when you arrive or call us at (832) 530-4188: direct payment by cash or card, no insurance needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bring it within 2 hours. If you can't, it keeps in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours; never freeze it.

One sample detects most cases, but parasites are shed intermittently; a series of 3 samples on different days increases sensitivity.

The occult blood test detects bleeding that may come from polyps or tumors. A positive result does not confirm cancer, but it does require a colonoscopy, which we refer you for.
